What Is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells no longer respond to insulin as effectively as they should. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps move glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, where it is used for energy.

When the cells become resistant, the pancreas produces more insulin to keep blood sugar levels within a normal range. Over time, the pancreas may no longer be able to keep up with the body’s needs, causing blood sugar levels to rise.

Insulin resistance is not diabetes, but it is a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes if left untreated. 

What Causes Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance usually develops because of several factors working together rather than a single cause. Common contributors include:

  • Excess body fat: Carrying extra weight, particularly around the abdomen, can interfere with how the body responds to insulin.
  • Hormonal conditions and menopause: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause may reduce insulin sensitivity and make blood sugar regulation more difficult.
  • Physical inactivity: Regular exercise helps muscles use glucose more efficiently, while inactivity can reduce insulin sensitivity.
  • Family history: Genetics may increase the likelihood of developing insulin resistance, especially if close relatives have type 2 diabetes.
  • Poor sleep and chronic stress: Inadequate sleep and long-term stress can affect cortisol levels and interfere with healthy blood sugar regulation.

What Are the Symptoms of Insulin Resistance?

Many people have no obvious symptoms during the early stages. In some cases, insulin resistance is discovered only after blood tests reveal abnormal blood sugar levels or other signs of metabolic dysfunction. 

When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Fatigue, particularly after meals
  • Increased hunger or frequent cravings for carbohydrates
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Weight gain around the abdomen
  • Dark, velvety patches of skin on the neck, armpits, or groin (acanthosis nigricans)

Because these symptoms can overlap with many other conditions, a medical evaluation is often needed to determine the underlying cause.

How Can Insulin Resistance Affect Your Health?

Insulin resistance affects more than blood sugar. Without treatment, it can contribute to several long-term health conditions. 

Type 2 Diabetes

One of the most common complications is type 2 diabetes. As insulin resistance worsens, the pancreas may eventually be unable to produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar within a healthy range.

Metabolic Syndrome

Insulin resistance is a major contributor to metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions that often occur together, including:

  • Elevated blood pressure
  • High blood sugar
  • Increased abdominal fat
  • Abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels

Weight Gain and Menopause
